{"id":768,"date":"2020-11-06T20:17:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-06T19:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acircleisround.com\/?p=768"},"modified":"2023-06-27T11:54:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T09:54:03","slug":"can-i-get-a-dose-of-biodiversity-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acircleisround.com\/nl\/2020\/11\/06\/can-i-get-a-dose-of-biodiversity-please\/","title":{"rendered":"Can I Get a Dose of Biodiversity, Please?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p\">It sounds rather implausible that there would be a single cure to heal our natural environment, reverse the rate of extinction of animal species, improve human health, and dampen the on-going changes in our climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Perhaps there is one. More specifically, one that embraces a deeper acknowledgment of the relevance of life\u2019s diversity in general. Biodiversity has become a buzzword. It refers in broad strokes to a wide-ranging biological variety of life. But the more intriguing question is: Why is it considered so important?<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">During uneasy times of a palpable changing climate and a deep-felt pandemic, it might be helpful to take a step back, get to the roots of these issues, and flesh out the meaningful interactions between biodiversity, climate, and global health.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"graf graf--h3\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">Seeing the Wood for the\u00a0Trees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Before we kick off, a bit of terminology is in order. The <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-22044-0_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-22044-0_8\">richness<\/a> of species points to the number of different species in a certain area, whereas species <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/biogeographic-region\/Components-of-species-diversity-species-richness-and-relative-abundance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/biogeographic-region\/Components-of-species-diversity-species-richness-and-relative-abundance\">abundance<\/a> designates the number of individuals per species. And <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitya-z.org\/content\/evenness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitya-z.org\/content\/evenness\">evenness<\/a> provides information about the relative distribution of species abundance in a community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e-education.psu.edu\/geog30\/node\/391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.e-education.psu.edu\/geog30\/node\/391\">Petra Tschakert et al.<\/a> define biodiversity as \u201ca measure of variation and richness of living organisms at a particular scale.\u201d <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uwgb.edu\/biodiversity\/about\/biodiversity.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.uwgb.edu\/biodiversity\/about\/biodiversity.asp\">Vicki Medland<\/a> applies a similar definition but emphasizes on making a distinction between genetic variability within a population, the diversity in species, and the degree of variety in ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The latter description connects well with the explanation given by the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/convention\/articles\/?a=cbd-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/convention\/articles\/?a=cbd-02\">Convention on Biological Diversity<\/a>, which describes biodiversity as \u201cthe variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_783\" style=\"width: 1094px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-783\" class=\"wp-image-783 size-full lazyload\" title=\"Biodiversity conservation entails several aspects.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?resize=629%2C644&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Biodiversity conservation entails several aspects.\" width=\"629\" height=\"644\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?w=1084&amp;ssl=1 1084w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?resize=293%2C300&amp;ssl=1 293w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?resize=1000%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?resize=768%2C786&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acircleisround.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Biodiversity_0_1.png?resize=900%2C922&amp;ssl=1 900w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 629px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 629\/644;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig. 1. (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/biology-geology-environmental-science\/profiles\/adjunct-faculty\/vhj452.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Tennessee<\/a>).<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"graf graf--figure\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/50323732\/Biodiversity_Definition_of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Swingland<\/a> furthermore argues that any geographical area impacts biodiversity in a number of ways, including \u201cthrough its richness in numbers of species, through the endemism (or geographical uniqueness) of these species [\u2026], and on the basis of degree of threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Because of the changing relative importance of these factors on the local, national, regional, or global scale, Swingland points out that it is far from a straightforward endeavour to establish a single definition of biodiversity. Not only that, \u201c[t]his plethora of terms and definitions\u201d, he continues, \u201cis one of the major stumbling blocks to reaching agreement in problem solving and decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Setting the issues of definition and policy implementation aside, there are nevertheless two popular biodiversity measurement metrics in use: the Shannon-Wiener function and Simpson\u2019s Diversity index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/eebweb.arizona.edu\/courses\/Ecol206\/shannon%20weaver-wiener.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/eebweb.arizona.edu\/courses\/Ecol206\/shannon%20weaver-wiener.pdf\">Shannon-Wiener function<\/a> takes into account both species richness and the average of evenness, and the function tends to rise when biodiversity flourishes. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biologysimulations.com\/post\/how-to-calculate-simpson-s-diversity-index-ap-biology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.biologysimulations.com\/post\/how-to-calculate-simpson-s-diversity-index-ap-biology\">Simpson\u2019s index<\/a>, in contrast, reflects the probability that two randomly sampled individuals belong to the same species: the stronger the dominance of that species, the lower the biodiversity, and thus the lower the index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">A general characteristic of biodiversity seems to be that the more we move towards higher latitudes, the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/voer.edu.vn\/m\/the-biodiversity-crisis\/3073fc48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/voer.edu.vn\/m\/the-biodiversity-crisis\/3073fc48\">less diverse<\/a> the biological ecosystem is. One explanation is that life was more abundant at the tropics during the last glacial period, which ended approximately 15,000 years ago. (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/voer.edu.vn\/m\/the-biodiversity-crisis\/3073fc48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VOER program<\/a>).<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">What is more, there are certain regions on our planet that deserve our utmost care\u200a\u2014\u200athey are called <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/priorities\/biodiversity-hotspots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/priorities\/biodiversity-hotspots\">biodiversity hotspots<\/a>. These places are distinguished by a geographically concentrated biological richness, while at the same time being under substantial threat by human activity. Although the current 36 hotspots only take up 2.4% of land globally, over half of all <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/biologydictionary.net\/vascular-plant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/biologydictionary.net\/vascular-plant\/\">vascular plants<\/a> and 43% of land vertebrates are unique to these critical areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">For instance, in <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/01\/200102143425.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madagascar<\/a>, about 90% of the total number of plant and animal species are endemic, and the country has lost nearly 90% of its forests. Other examples include the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cepf.net\/our-work\/biodiversity-hotspots\/tropical-andes\/species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.cepf.net\/our-work\/biodiversity-hotspots\/tropical-andes\/species\">Tropical Andes<\/a> in South America and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/enviroliteracy.org\/ecosystems\/hotspots-of-biodiversity\/sundaland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/enviroliteracy.org\/ecosystems\/hotspots-of-biodiversity\/sundaland\/\">Sundaland<\/a> in Southeast Asia with more than 15,000 endemic plant species. (Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/oceantracks.org\/library\/hotspots\/biodiversity-hotspots-and-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oceantracks<\/a>).<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In the next two sections, I will examine the significance of biodiversity from two perspectives: its relationship with climate change, and its connection to emerging diseases.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"graf graf--h3\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">Climate Change Entanglement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Terrestrial Zones<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">First of all, it goes without saying that restored or conserved natural habitats, such as forests and woodlands, can <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/climate\/intro.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/climate\/intro.shtml\">contribute<\/a> to the removal of carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) from the atmosphere. As a case in point, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969718343717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969718343717\">Yin Li et al.<\/a> ascertain, based on their research on subtropical forests in China, that \u201cbiodiversity conservation might be an effective way for enhancing tree carbon storage in natural, species-rich forest ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Less CO\u2082 in the atmosphere leads to easing the pressure of a warming planet\u200a\u2014\u200acarbon dioxide is a <a href=\"https:\/\/acircleisround.com\/2020\/01\/25\/the-chicken-or-the-egg-co2-and-temperature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greenhouse gas<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aas well as indirectly ensuring <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2007GL031101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2007GL031101\">less<\/a> air pollution deaths, according to research conducted by Mark Jacobson in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Moreover, in the context of their work on Australian vegetation, researchers Rachel Standish and Suzanne Prober reveal <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/emr.12426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/emr.12426\">additional perks<\/a> to a rich plant diversity other than carbon sequestration from the air, namely reinforced soil carbon storage, stability, and ecological resilience towards disturbances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">On top of all that, reforestation boosts the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/cif-green\/2010\/jun\/10\/biodiversity-climate-change-poverty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/cif-green\/2010\/jun\/10\/biodiversity-climate-change-poverty\">availability<\/a> of ecosystem services, e.g. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7139249\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7139249\/\">nutrient cycling<\/a> (which comes with significant consequences for the quality of water and climate), fuel wood for cooking, medicines, construction materials, fruit, and freshwater regulation for farming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Even so, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/257510488_Agroforestry_for_biomass_production_and_carbon_sequestration_An_overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/257510488_Agroforestry_for_biomass_production_and_carbon_sequestration_An_overview\">Shibu Jose and Sougata Bardhan<\/a> report that the greatest potential for capturing carbon lies with agroforestry\u200a\u2014\u200aa land-use system that <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/sarep.ucdavis.edu\/are\/ecosystem\/agroforestry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/sarep.ucdavis.edu\/are\/ecosystem\/agroforestry\">integrates<\/a> trees, plants, agricultural crops, and livestock. (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/257510488_Agroforestry_for_biomass_production_and_carbon_sequestration_An_overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paper by Shibu Jose and Sougata Bardhan<\/a>).<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Scientists Qiang Fang and Shuangquan Huang furthermore underline that biodiversity is essential to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/engine.scichina.com\/publisher\/scp\/journal\/CSB\/59\/6\/10.1360\/972013-378?slug=abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/engine.scichina.com\/publisher\/scp\/journal\/CSB\/59\/6\/10.1360\/972013-378?slug=abstract\">sustain<\/a> pollination, i.e. the transmission of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/vegetable-gardening-mississippi\/pollination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/extension.msstate.edu\/vegetable-gardening-mississippi\/pollination\">pollen<\/a> between flowers. And since over <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boerenlandvogels.nl\/sites\/default\/files\/Thomann%20et%20al.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.boerenlandvogels.nl\/sites\/default\/files\/Thomann%20et%20al.pdf\">80%<\/a> of wild plants species depend on insects for fruit and seed production, there would be much less carbon sequestration without pollination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">On a more microscopic level, some researchers have laid bare a linkage between the powerful greenhouse gas methane\u200a\u2014\u200ait is <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/4496e91d056c336983e7914cc089b655\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=39409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/4496e91d056c336983e7914cc089b655\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=39409\">25<\/a> times more potent than CO\u2082\u200a\u2014\u200aand the gut microbiome composition of livestock. Bear in mind though that almost all the methane production from the livestock sector can be <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/jasbsci.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40104-017-0141-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/jasbsci.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40104-017-0141-0\">traced back<\/a> to microbial digestive processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">For instance, the comparative research between yak and cattle on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/1471-2180-12-237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/1471-2180-12-237\">Juan Boo Liang et al.<\/a> suggests that a more diverse gut community of methane-producing microorganisms (methanogens) might be related to a reduction of methane production. The study by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/archaea\/2016\/5916067\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/archaea\/2016\/5916067\/\">Jagadish Padmanabha et al.<\/a> comes to parallel conclusions.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Genetic Relevance<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In terms of genetic variability, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nclimate2074?message-global=remove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Yannic et al.<\/a> argue that animal species may generally narrow their living space as an adaptive response to climate change, thereby weakening their genetic diversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">When it comes to the Madagascan endemic pea plant Delonix decaryi, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265090545_Do_species_conservation_assessments_capture_genetic_diversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265090545_Do_species_conservation_assessments_capture_genetic_diversity\">Malin Rivers et al.<\/a> have calculated to a similar extent that genetic diversity diminishes with an expanding range loss. stimulate plant survival and coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Such research insights are crucial when considering that the coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests provide fisheries resources to the local people, shields the coastal areas against flooding (in itself a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coraltrianglecenter.org\/managing-for-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.coraltrianglecenter.org\/managing-for-climate-change\/\">consequence<\/a> of climate change), and enables carbon storage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Notwithstanding these positive effects of biodiversity, some research studies, including those by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1365-2745.12897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1365-2745.12897\">Michaela Zeiter et al.<\/a> and <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/68\/4\/273\/4913799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/68\/4\/273\/4913799\">Aliny Pires et al.<\/a>, could not confirm that more diverse ecosystems are systematically better at protecting against the harmful repercussions of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Instead of then writing off biodiversity as an unsuccessful tool to counter climate change, perhaps such results rather serve as a pertinent reminder of the devastating potential of climate change.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"graf graf--h3\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">Pandemic Frenzies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In the words of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" last 100 years, the frequency of pandemics has been on the rise, mostly due to \u201cincreased global travel and integration, urbanization, changes in land use, and greater exploitation of the natural environment\u201d, according to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/elibrary.worldbank.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1596\/978-1-4648-0527-1_ch17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/elibrary.worldbank.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1596\/978-1-4648-0527-1_ch17\">Nita Madhav et al<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Indeed, as <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10531-020-02021-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10531-020-02021-6\">Dirk Schmeller et al.<\/a> further explain, an \u201c[i]ntensifying pathogen emergence can be attributed to climate change, biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and an increasing rate of wildlife\u2013human contacts.\u201d What is more, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1098\/rstb.2001.0888\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1098\/rstb.2001.0888\">75%<\/a> of emerging infectious organisms pathogenic to humans have an animal origin\u200a\u2014\u200athat is, they are zoonotic.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">More Is\u00a0Less<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The nature of the relationship between biodiversity and disease emergence is <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1890\/13-1041.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1890\/13-1041.1\">complex<\/a>. One hypothesis, referred to as the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caryinstitute.org\/science\/research-projects\/biodiversity-community-ecology-and-dilution-effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.caryinstitute.org\/science\/research-projects\/biodiversity-community-ecology-and-dilution-effect\">dilution effect<\/a>, stipulates that a substantial degree of biodiversity lowers the risk of disease infectivity (or, equivalently, that biodiversity loss amplifies the risk). <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320720307655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320720307655\">Serge Morand<\/a>, for one, establishes a link between threatened biodiversity and outbreaks of human infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">One example that illustrates the dilution effect is the West Nile virus. For instance, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-0817\/9\/1\/48\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-0817\/9\/1\/48\/htm\">Alex Byas and Gregory Ebel<\/a> argue that, despite the high richness of viral hosts (bird species and mosquitos), major epidemics have been absent from Central and South America. Such are the findings by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0057519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0057519\">Denis Valle and James Clark<\/a>: conservation efforts of forest cover in the Brazilian Amazon are related to a higher malaria incidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Other research studies corroborate this inverse association between biodiversity and disease. For example, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-017-00923-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-017-00923-8\">Nathan Breit et al<\/a>. assert that stronger mammalian richness and the presence of tropical forests\u200a\u2014\u200aplaces of outspoken biodiversity\u200a\u2014\u200aboth boost the risk of pathogen emergence. Similarly, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1098\/rspb.2010.0340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1098\/rspb.2010.0340\">Michael Gavin et al.<\/a> find that pathogen richness is positively correlated with the number of birds as well as mammals species (remember, correlation does <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e-education.psu.edu\/marcellus\/node\/636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.e-education.psu.edu\/marcellus\/node\/636\">not<\/a> necessarily imply causation).<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Still undiscovered mammalian viruses abound\u200a\u2014\u200aone study by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/mbio.asm.org\/content\/4\/5\/e00598-13.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/mbio.asm.org\/content\/4\/5\/e00598-13.short\">Jonna Mazet et al.<\/a> estimates the number to be around 320,000\u200a\u2014\u200awhich is why recurrent human contact with areas of high biodiversity could further inflate the chances of emerging zoonoses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">This is precisely what <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20232229\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20232229\/\">Amy Pedersen and Jonathan Davies<\/a> have demonstrated. Studying wild primates in central Africa and Amazonia (South America), they conclude that these regions are hotspots for cross-species transmission incidents as a result of an elevated diversity of primate species. As a case in point, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ecs2.1676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ecs2.1676\">Richard Ostfeld and Felicia Keesing<\/a> elucidate this higher complexity with the following logical chain of interdependent events: \u201cHigh diversity of vertebrate hosts must result in high total diversity of pathogens [\u2026], which in turn must lead to high diversity of actual or potential zoonotic pathogens [\u2026], which in turn must increase the probability of new emergence events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In addition, they state that the data in support of this inverted line of thinking is rather unconvincing, compared to the strong empirical evidence available for the dilution effect.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Think Local, Act\u00a0Local<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In step with the dilution effect, it would thus be beneficial to globally invest in biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Regarding ecological diversity, this would make sense, since \u201c[t]he environmental microbiome promotes ecosystem stability and the maintenance of biodiversity by preserving ecosystem health and contributing to important ecological functions\u201d, as reported by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10531-020-02021-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10531-020-02021-6\">Dirk Schmeller et al.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Such a wide-spread engagement would all in all not be an ill-considered decision especially in the knowledge that \u201c[b]oth host and environmental microbiomes are interconnected and regularly exchange microorganisms\u201d, the authors add.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">After all, the dilution effect invites us to embrace the idea of the more the merrier, because it pushes the disease risk down.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"graf graf--figure\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 1132px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"graf-image lazyload\" title=\"A correlation between environmental microbiome and ecological multifunctionality.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1%2AYpLmmNfk2PzyJoeOOcEYlg.png?resize=629%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A correlation between environmental microbiome and ecological multifunctionality.\" width=\"629\" height=\"240\" data-image-id=\"1*YpLmmNfk2PzyJoeOOcEYlg.png\" data-width=\"1122\" data-height=\"428\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 629px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 629\/240;\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig. 9. Instead of resorting to generalizing trends of species biodiversity, they claim that zoonotic pathogen transmission risk is a local, idiosyncratic phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">That is not to say that the dilution effect could not hold in certain circumstances. The meta-analysis conducted by the authors rather emphasizes that \u201c[a] focus on the local ecology and interactions of important hosts and vectors is more likely to reveal insights into how to reduce disease risk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">So, more is still less, albeit not in a general way.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Taking One Step\u00a0Back<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">But perhaps the entire current discussion of how biodiversity conservation impacts the rate of infection of reservoir hosts or pathogen transmitters (vectors) might come crumbling down, if we humans continue to encroach upon the habitats of animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">As a matter of fact, anthropological disturbances could very well <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/mam.12201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">change<\/a> the behaviour of animal hosts, thereby affecting the odds of zoonotic transmission and the patterns of disease outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">On top of that, a higher incidence of wildlife-human contact facilitates a greater ease for the pathogen to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1006390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1006390\">adapt<\/a> to humans, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0093094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0093094\">allowing<\/a> in turn for a smoother human-to-human transmission.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"graf graf--figure\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 1088px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"graf-image lazyload\" title=\"Trends in population growth and deforestation on Mauritius since human colonization.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1%2AdKXadDBg074OaSH2vRF_ug.png?resize=629%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Trends in population growth and deforestation on Mauritius since human colonization.\" width=\"629\" height=\"469\" data-image-id=\"1*dKXadDBg074OaSH2vRF_ug.png\" data-width=\"1078\" data-height=\"804\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 629px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 629\/469;\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig. 10. In fact, the novel virus evolved over a period of 11.3 years in order to acquire such specific transmission properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">At the same time, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/archpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13690-017-0218-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/archpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13690-017-0218-4\">Timothy Robinson et al.<\/a> associate the emergence of H7N9 with a rapid intensification of the poultry industry. As these economic activities occur in the midst of regions characterized by wetland agriculture and habitats of wild birds (waterfowls), increased contact with reservoirs of avian influenza viruses becomes inevitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Based on such views, we may be inclined to think that we need to withdraw ourselves from wildlife-rich areas as much as possible. Although there is certainly some truth to that against the backdrop of proliferating pathogen communities, it is equally sensible to remain mindful of the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/all.13763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/all.13763\">biodiversity hypothesis of health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">That hypothesis tells us that not only less contact with the natural environment but also a decline in biodiversity deprives us from exposure to a rich microbial diversity, pushing up in this way the risk of inflammatory diseases as our immune system subsequently degrades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In the end, finding a stable, dynamic balance between the living spaces of humans, animals, and the natural environment is probably the most insightful route to take. Rather, fostering greater sensitivity to local conditions might be a more reasonable way to go about restoring a richer variety of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">But if we truly wish to witness such greater biodiversity, we must ask ourselves the following questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">What are we willing to do to save and sustain our biological hotspots, which prove crucial to the whole ecosystem of our planet? Are we willing to adopt more ecologically tenable and equitable ways of living our lives, for the sake of survival of ultimately all forms of life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">After all, we can\u2019t have our cake and eat it too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acircleisround.com\/articles\/\">Back to Articles<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It sounds rather implausible that there would be a single cure to heal our natural environment, reverse the rate of extinction of animal species, improve human health, and dampen the on-going changes in our climate.
