Because enemy images are mostly associated with negative emotions, negative stereotyping, prejudices, anger and hatred, this locational split in the brain partly accounts for biases in information-processing within the context of enemy imagery formation<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">\u00b2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3666\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What is more, psychosocial and conflict scholar Daniel Bar-Tal argues that, \u201c[the] process of knowledge formation is always biased, because strong motivations such as ego defense or security needs underlie the information processing in situations of conflict.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"d2f5\" class=\"ow ka dt ar aq dv ox oy oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What Do We Actually Know, and Can We Trust What We Know?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"afa3\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As a result, society members form their beliefs about conflict through selective information processing and biased interpretation of acquired information\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">\u00b3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"93d5\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In this regard, cognitive psychology scholars Richard Shiffrin and Walter Schnyder interestingly mention that, \u201cautomaticity exemplifies the notion that the unconscious is acquired through learning\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">\u2074<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pn po pp\">\n<p id=\"d2d9\" class=\"nz oa dt pq ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In addition, mediation scholar Tim Hicks posits that, as \u201cestablishing and maintaining our knowing is the basic and most profound element of consciousness\u201d<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">\u2075<\/a>, we have the natural tendency to hold on to our perception of truth and reality in order to protect the very core of our identity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"44fa\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">All of this incentivizes me to closer examine an alliance between cognitive biases in information-processing, psychodynamic processes of enemy imagery formation and (non-)dualistic frameworks, all within the context of conflict transformation<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">\u2076<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9950\" class=\"jz ka dt ar aq dv mc pr me ps pt pu pv pw px py kd\">Information-Processing and Psychodynamics<\/h2>\n<h4 id=\"4df3\" class=\"ow ka dt ar aq dv ox oy oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph\">Schema Theories<\/h4>\n<p id=\"9f09\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Schema theories within the field of cognitive psychology can be of assistance to strengthen the link between information-processing and unconscious mental processes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6350\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ob pz\"><em class=\"pq\">Key to these theories is the notion of schemata, which are defined as \u201cunconscious, active mental processes\u201d<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">\u2077<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Schema theories shed light on the processing of information about \u201cobjects and events in their world in the context of their past experiences\u201d<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">\u2078<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a770\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Subsequently, these theories are helpful in the context of enemy imagery formation to the extent that they set out cognitive strategies for how to structure and process information about in- and out-groups.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"0827\" class=\"ow ka dt ar aq dv ox oy oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph\">Theory of Core Constructs<\/h4>\n<p id=\"c3fe\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To further scrutinize the dynamics of biases in information processing, it is relevant to turn to psychologist George Kelly\u2019s theory of core constructs, which greatly helps to understand why certain pieces of new information are either rejected or acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3c54\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ob pz\"><em class=\"pq\">These core constructs constitute the very essence of \u201ca person\u2019s approach to life and to the roles he or she plays (sense of self)\u201d<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">\u2079<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. More to the point, they \u201ccannot be changed significantly without disturbing the very roots of our being\u201d<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">\u00b9\u2070<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2c62\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When new information threatens to invalidate these core constructs, it then makes sense why such information \u201cwill be rejected or redefined in order to fit the existing, rather impermeable constructs\u201d<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">\u00b9\u00b9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2d3f\" class=\"jz ka dt ar aq dv mc pr me ps pt pu pv pw px py kd\">Non-Dualist Thinking and Conflict Transformation<\/h2>\n<h4 id=\"7679\" class=\"ow ka dt ar aq dv ox oy oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph\">Conflicting Minds<\/h4>\n<p id=\"f362\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Facing someone who holds different or controversial beliefs might be confronting, as we might perceive these diverging beliefs as a threat to our identity<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">\u00b9\u00b2<\/a>. Psychosocial scholar Eran Halperin explains that \u201c[fear] can even be induced by information received regarding potential threats to the individual or his group\u201d<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">\u00b9\u00b3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5ce5\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">At the one hand, fear might explain the challenge of being open to and integrating into one\u2019s knowing new and often seemingly conflicting knowledge about the other. At the other hand, new information might be viewed as an opportunity to increase one\u2019s knowing, allow one\u2019s identity to be more diverse, or adopt a more nuanced form of reality.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pn po pp\">\n<p id=\"4c6f\" class=\"nz oa dt pq ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Along the same vein, Hicks hints that the usually unconscious process of holding on to our perception of truth and reality might help to explain both dehumanization of the other and the use of dualistic language, such as good-bad, right-wrong or win-lose.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"6037\" class=\"ow ka dt ar aq dv ox oy oz pa pb pc pd pe pf pg ph\">Non-Dualist Views<\/h4>\n<p id=\"b4e1\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Communications scholar Marla Del Collins depicts dualism as a framework of reference whereby dichotomous thinking penetrates every facet of human social reality<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">\u00b9\u2074<\/a>. Dualism is reflected in a scheme of antagonistic concepts, such as war or peace, beautiful or ugly, win or lose, with us or against us, outside or inside, true or false, high or low, etc.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"qa\">\n<div id=\"2480\" class=\"qb qc ih ar mb b ky qd qe qf qg qh om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb b qi qj av\">What is fundamental to recognize here, is Del Collins\u2019 claim that dualism, as a dogma, can foster conflict, as it refuses to see social reality as complex, evolutionary, flexible, interconnected, diverse and pluralistic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"9a62\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc qk oe ql og qm oi qn ok qo om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Sociopolitical scholar Michael Salzman corroborates this assertion by stating that fundamentalists \u201cdo not support compassion or tolerance for those who differ on core existential concerns\u201d<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">\u00b9\u2075<\/a>. What is more, they \u201cbelieve that they are opposed by forces of evil that must be confronted and defeated\u201d<a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\">\u00b9\u2076<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"150b\" class=\"jz ka dt ar aq dv mc pr me ps pt pu pv pw px py kd\">Bringing It All Together<\/h2>\n<p id=\"c127\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc pi oe pj og pk oi pl ok pm om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Non-dualistic thinking resonates with psychodynamic development theories in as much as \u201chuman maturity is the capacity to hold a stable, mature view of oneself and other as people with both positive and negative characteristics\u201d<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">\u00b9\u2077<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pn po pp\">\n<p id=\"9cac\" class=\"nz oa dt pq ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In other words, the better we understand psychodynamic principles at work in the context of conflict transformation and dehumanization processes, the more we move away from living within a dualistic worldview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"8d77\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As a result, we progress towards adopting a more nuanced version of reality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"qp fe qq bg qr ns qs qt qu qv qw\">\n<section class=\"fg fh gj jl jm\">\n<div class=\"n p\">\n<div class=\"z ab ac ae af lz ah ai\">\n<p id=\"1082\" class=\"nz oa dt ar ob b oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[1]<\/a> Ellis, A., Abrams, M., Abrams, L.
